PLEIN PUBLIQUE donates 1% of its revenue to initiatives that make the world greener. This time, we’re supporting the NatuurWijs Foundation, which teaches children through nature experiences just how special and important our planet is. Our donation helps school classes from schools serving at-risk students take field trips into nature at a discounted rate. Because when children get to know and appreciate nature, they’ll want to take better care of it later in life.

WE KID YOU NOT
There are so many amazing organizations dedicated to nature that it can be pretty hard to choose sometimes. But we’ve made up our minds: this time, no flowers, bees, or animals—but… kids! Huh, kids? Mais oui—they’re potential future conservationists. That is, provided they know and appreciate nature. And that just happens to be the goal of our brand-new donation partner!
The NatuurWijs Foundation
“The NatuurWijs Foundation is dedicated to connecting children with nature. We believe that if children feel connected to nature, they’ll be willing to take responsibility for it later in life. In the long term, this lays the foundation for a sustainable society,” says NatuurWijs. How do they plan to achieve this? By striving to ensure that all children, during their elementary school years, go out at least once with a “NatuurWijzer”—a professional trained by the foundation—to experience nature “in real life.”
“THE THREE H'S: Heart, Head, and Hands”
While it used to be considered improper for us to sneak off into the woods together, today’s kids are actually encouraged to do so. The times, they are a-changin’ : )
Out and about with the Nature Guide, the kids get to know nature. First with their hearts, when they hear the birds singing and spot squirrels in the trees. Then with their minds, when they learn just how ingenious our ecosystem really is. Finally, with their hands, as they dig happily in the soil or cast a dip net into the ditch.
Their sense of wonder grows, just like their curiosity. What do beech nuts taste like? Does a snail crawl so slowly because it doesn’t want to slip on its own slime trail? No matter how crazy the question, they want to know, smell, taste, and feel everything. Through play, something magical happens: the children realize that nature isn’t just some distant phenomenon, and that they themselves are part of it. Mission accomplished.
What does NatuurWijs do with our donation?
Many city kids only know the outdoors from the interactive whiteboard; they’ve never smelled a pine tree or heard a woodpecker hammering away at one in person. The donation that we, together with you, have raised will be used to give school classes from so-called “schools in need” a substantial discount on a day trip to “real” nature. Out onto the trails, down the tree-lined paths—we can’t think of a more fun or effective way to bridge the gap between kids and nature. After all, every street-smart city kid who grows up to love the outdoors is one more person who’s made a difference.
So, will you soon spot a school class “in the wild” during a stroll through the woods? It just might be that they’re there partly thanks to your purchase.
